More Than Inclusion: Creating A Sense of Belonging

Speaker: Ann Marie Jannette, Equity and Human Rights Specialist for the City of Dubuque

Do you feel seen, heard, valued, and respected in your organization? Do you feel like you belong?

The concept of inclusion is commonly heard, but less heard is the concept of belonging. Feeling like you are included doesn’t always translate into feeling like you belong. Inclusion is created by actions, rules, and laws. Belonging is about how those actions make a person feel; belonging is the emotional outcome of inclusion.

Everyone wants to feel like themselves, act like themselves, and be their true selves. We’re going to talk about ways that we can foster a sense of belonging for ourselves and for others.

Ann Marie Jannette is the Equity and Human Rights Specialist for the City of Dubuque. She has taught HSED and ESOL classes for NICC as well as Developmental Writing for the University of Dubuque. She has a master’s in communication from the University of Dubuque and is currently in the Doctor of Education program at the College of St. Scholastica. She is a native of Dubuque but has also enjoyed living and working in Boston as well as San Diego.
